The English Thoroughbred Horse

The English Thoroughbred is renowned for racing and jumping. It originated from a 3rd century stock of Arab and Barb horses. From then on, selective breeding was used to maintain the speed and beauty of the breed.

The Thoroughbred’s short leg bones, slim bodies and broad chests allow a long, easy stride. The breed has an amazing talent for speed and stamina, making them a popular choice for breeders trying to obtain successful racehorses and show-jumpers. They are known for their sensitive and high-spirited nature, although they can be a challenging mount for younger or less experienced riders.

The favored conditions of the Thoroughbred are warm, earthy areas with water to bathe in- be careful as they are known to be feisty around water! Thoroughbreds generally have bay or chestnut coats, rarely black or grey due to the foundation stallions. Stars, blazes and socks of a white or grey colour are commonly found on these horses and blazes, though less common, can be seen too.
