Once I met a child who was normal.
But not just normal.
This child was the most normal child
That I have ever met.
Far more normal, in fact, than
Any other child I have ever come across.
Uncommonly normal.
Impossibly normal.
And
If I’m honest
All this excessive normality
Made this child
Rather
odd.
(I wrote this after taking a note in my notebook while having a conversation with a child in my class. I think I was tried to make a joke about someone being so normal that it was weird. The joke fell fairly flat, so I felt there was unfinished business.

Exactly, too normal – ‘rather odd’!
A good poem to share in the classroom to open a discussion about – What is normal? Who can define normal?
Thank you.
Thanks Marcela!
Yes, when I read it back after posting I thought it might be a good stimulus for a P4C (philosophy for Children) session
Thanks for sharing Billybeanwrites,
It reminded me of this line from Claudia Gray’s, ‘Afterlife’:
“Forget normal.” He grinned. “We’re going to be extraordinary.”
(She was writing about vampires, though ….)
