I decided to write a poem to share my love of reading with the children in my class.
So many books…
Not sure where to look?
Let’s tidy them up as a start,
Then read them all and awaken the heart.
Reading is everywhere, all shapes and sizes,
Look around and you’ll see, a world full of reading surprises.
Reading is your choice: any time, any space.
You are in charge of what you read: go at your own pace.
Through reading you learn and you travel different worlds,
Dream and create, the imagination unfolds.
Reading for pleasure is unique in its kind,
It makes you feel free, it relaxes the mind.
There is one simple thing that I really like to do,
Just read, it is so fun: I recommend this to you.
I 🧡 this ode to the infinite ways in which reading can enrich your life, Elena.
How did the children respond to your poem? How did you feel about sharing it with them? 😊
Thank you, the children were very excited and it reminded me of the importance of sharing reading and writing experiences openly to create a reading and writing community. I presented the poem with pictures of me and my books so this encouraged a book chat afterwards. It was especially powerful to hear about all their examples of reading in everyday life.
This poem really made me think about the joy of reading and sharing this with a class. I particularly like this stanza:
Through reading you learn and you travel different worlds,
Dream and create, the imagination unfolds.
Did the class use your wonderful poem as a model to write about the joy of reading themselves?
Thanks for your comment. Yes the children gave me a round of applause and then wrote short messages about why they love reading, what it means to them.
That’s wonderful. 🧡
